Packing List
EQUIPMENT:
- Light weight binoculars – preferably 7×35 or 8×32
- Camera – don’t forget plenty of spare batteries and memory
- Day Bag – small to medium, soft bag for carrying personal items
- Good Flashlight – pack extra batteries
- Soft Gun Case – ONLY WHEN BRINGING YOUR OWN RIFLE
- Rugged Pair of Sunglasses
- Miscellaneous – personal toiletries, extra eyeglasses, insect repellent, good quality sunscreen (at least SPF 30), lip balm, reading material, personal tobacco products, and any personal medication.
CLOTHING
It is unnecessary to pack excessive clothing because laundry services are provided every second day. Four changes of clothes are perfectly adequate for any length of stay.
Our suggested list of clothing:
- Four lightweight shirts—two long-sleeved and two short-sleeved (olive green or dark khaki)
- Two long trousers
- Two walking shorts
- Light-weight hunting jacket
- Light to medium jacket
- Light raincoat
- Four sets of underwear
- Sweater or Sweatshirt
- “Boonie” hat or other such wide-brimmed hat
- Six pairs medium socks
- Two pairs walking shoes
- One pair of lodge slippers
- One pair of lightweight gloves
Note: If you are prone to sore feet, heavier socks and a pair of sturdier hunting boots are advisable. Whatever your choice, shoe or boot, the soles should be made of rubber without lugs or cleats so that you can move quietly while stalking and tracking game. Dark-coloured boots/shoes and clothes are recommended, NOT WHITE!
Precautions
- For your peace of mind, we recommend that you take out travel and medical insurance prior to your departure. If you are using medication, you must remember to bring enough for your entire stay, and that all medications are contained in the prescribed packaging.
- Please inform the Diepkuil Safaris office of any medical conditions, such as allergies, disabilities, and/or physical limitations.
- South Africa is mostly malaria-free with the only reported cases being in certain isolated areas in the northernmost reaches of the country. Malaria occurs mostly in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, and Mozambique. Malarial prophylactic is recommended if you are traveling to these areas. For more information regarding malaria, visit the CDC’s malaria page.
- We recommend that you get vaccinated for Hepatitis A & B, as well as Tetanus, before departing for your safari. Visit the CDC’s travel page for more health-related travel information.
